Elder Abuse Prevention Program
Vision Urbana’s Elder Abuse Prevention Program is a vital, city-funded initiative serving the Lower East Side for over five years. As the only community-based elder abuse services provider directly located within Lower East Side communities of color—including NYCHA housing—our program has been a lifeline for hundreds of older adults experiencing or at risk of abuse.
Through this initiative, Vision Urbana has delivered:
- Comprehensive Mental Health Assessments for older adults
- One-on-One and Group Support Sessions
- Educational Presentations on elder abuse prevention for Tenant Associations, churches, and community-based organizations (CBOs)
- An Annual Elder Abuse Health Campaign featuring local resources such as NYC Health & Hospitals’ Roberto Clemente Clinic and the Elder Abuse Center at NY Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital
These services are offered in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, ensuring inclusive access for our diverse community. In every setting—from interactive workshops to case management and health support—our program equips older adults with tools for safety, healing, and self-advocacy.
Innovative Legal Protection: Advance Care Planning
Vision Urbana is proud to lead an innovative elder protection initiative—Advance Care Planning (ACP)—in partnership with the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG). This annual legal clinic helps older adults develop advance directives, empowering them to define future healthcare preferences while safeguarding against medical and financial abuse.
ACP is not just a document—it is an ongoing process of legal, emotional, and cultural significance, especially for older adults in under-resourced, multilingual communities. Vision Urbana ensures that this critical support is delivered with cultural sensitivity and legal expertise in all three program languages.
